New Year - New Vision

A new year is a new season and a great opportunity for a new vision. Many of us use this time to reflect on the previous year and to set new goals, commonly known as, new year’s resolutions. Many are excited to set the new year’s resolutions on Jan 1st and then slowly watch the excitement level drop by midnight of Jan 1st (smile). I know, I’m not the best at keeping new year’s resolutions either. However, what I have found is that having a vision for your life and for your family is stronger and more motivating than making resolutions. In this blog, I will share with you five areas you should consider when writing your vision so that you can greatly enhance your quality of living.

This first thing you must understand is that having a vision is tapping into your ability to think about or plan for your future with wisdom. Your vision should be connected to your God given purpose. Vision is important because, “where there is no vision, the people perish” (Prov 29:18). Vision allows you to see beyond your present situation and get excited to create a plan to get to a better place. Vision allows you to discipline yourself as you seek out guidance and wise counsel as needed.

Since your vision is connected to your purpose in life, it is beneficial that you write it down. Hab 2:2-3 says, “Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, That he may run who reads it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time; But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; Because it will surely come, It will not tarry.” This is probably the most important element when creating your vision.

Here are the five areas you should consider when writing your vision if you desire to live your best life. A vision for each of these 5 areas will keep you motivated throughout the year. As a believer, it is important to seek God for wisdom as you think about and start to write down your vision.

Spiritual Growth Vision- This area of life is connected to your desire to grow in your relationship with God. What are some things you would like to see happen so that you can grow spiritually? It can be an opportunity to read out the bible from Genesis to Revelation. Whatever you think of, write it down.

Personal Growth Vision – This area is connected to your desire to grow personally. It can be an opportunity to learn a new skill like playing the piano. It is connected to self-development, which may mean going back to school or reading a book. Whatever you think of, write it down.

Marriage and Family Vision – This area is connected to your desire to see your marriage and your family strive. Without a marriage vision, there will be division and how can tow walk together if they do not agree? (Amos 3:3). The marriage vision can be an opportunity to learn some new strategies on how to be a better husband, or a better wife, or a better parent. It can be an opportunity to attend a marriage or family seminar, take a course or read a marriage book. Whatever you think of, write it down.

Health Vision – I know, you said you would do it two years ago and then you didn’t, but had a legitimate excuse when the pandemic started. I’m taking about going to the gym to exercise. The health vision area is connected to your desire to remain healthy. It is a great opportunity to schedule your regular doctor’s checkups or to buy a bike to ride twice a week. Whatever you think of, write it down.

Financial Vision - Money, money, money, money! You got it. This area is connected to your desire to manage your finances better in this new year. It is an opportunity to budget how much you would like to give, save, spend and invest. It is also a great opportunity to tap into your creative abilities to see how you can create wealth for yourself and family. It may be an opportunity to start or expand your current business. It may be taking a course on how to budget or how to start investing in stocks. Whatever you think of, write it down.

If you are STILL reading this, (smile), it relaxes the face muscles. On a more serious note, I need you to take action by scheduling a time this week when you will sit down and think about the five areas discussed above. If you have found these areas helpful, please share with others. May this new year be filled with joy and excitement which comes when you write your vision.
