The Lie Most Married Couples Believe
I must confess, I use to believe this lie, but not anymore.
The lie most couples believe: Marriage counseling, coaching, and/or mentoring are only NEEDED when couples are in difficult seasons in their marriage. If this were true, the next logical question to ask is, “What about those couples whose marriages are in a good season?” Do these couples wait until a bad season before seeking out help?
Absolutely not.
The truth is, EVERY married couple needs a BLEND of counseling, coaching or mentoring to navigate this wonderful journey of marriage. I have found this blend to be in the form of marriage enrichment.
However, couples who believe the lie that one should only seek out help in difficult seasons in marriage has led many couples to a place of separation or divorce. Some of the reasons for this are as follows:
- Couples often get professional help only as a last resort.
- Couples who wait too long to deal with marital issues lowers their chances of marital restoration and success.
- Generally, one partner sometimes resists the idea a counseling.
- The counselor is placed in a position where he or she must focus on the couple’s past, while exploring the current issues at hand
Couples are sometimes blind sighted and not able to see the need for marriage enrichment. I sometimes like to say, “the truth will set you free but a lie will keep you in bondage.”
Let’s be honest here. If you have a car, you would agree that the manufacture suggests regularly scheduled maintenance at different intervals.
Why?
To check and/or prevent major damages. Your car is a big investment and should be cared for. Where do you take your car for maintenance? The car experts, known as a car mechanic. How much more for your marriage which is the most important investment you will ever make. You need marriage maintenance and you need someone who is a marriage expert to help you.
