Married? Keeping the Big Launch Great

He asked, she said “yes.” She asked, he said “yes.” Regardless of who asked the big question, once agreed, the preparation began and everyone were excited for the “big day.” This big day was the launch of something great. The question is, how do you keep the big launch great?

I believe it is God’s will for marriages to succeed. I believed this journey begun by observing my parents who have been married for over 46 years. I have been married to my beautiful wife now for over 14 years and I can still say after 14 years, we have found ways to keep our big launch GREAT!

As a pastor, I love performing weddings. It brings me much joy when I say, “I now pronounce you, husband and wife.” Such a joyous moment. The husband and wife seem to be so in love and happy. Support from friends and family members are amazing. This is the big launch.

Truth be told, it does not take long after the big launch for marital distress comes into the home. Success come into the marriage when couples learn how to keep the launch great even in difficult seasons. The learning must be intentional.

Why?

Because research shows that when there is distress in the home, parenting skills becomes poorer. Conflicts between siblings escalates. Behavioral problems in children increase. Research also shows that distressed marriages correlate with increased cases of illnesses, e.g. cardiac disease, cancer, and chronic pain. Distressed marriages are also linked to depression, eating disorders, increased physical and psychological abuse of partners, alcoholism, including, binge drinking, and out-of-home drinking.

Wow! This is what happens when a launch has gone BAD! This must be addressed IMMEDIATELY so as to prevent further destruction in your marriage.

So here’s what you can do to keep the launch great in your marriage. You must become a “Marriage researcher.” The same way you may research a new car or home, I believe you should be actively researching on how to enhance your marriage. You may not have realized that, as you took the time to read this blog, you became a “marriage researcher.” James 2:20 states, “….faith without works is dead?” You must invest (time, work, resources) in your marriage to keep the launch great and most importantly in struggle areas in your marriage. Books, seminars, counseling, internet are all great ways to do so.
