With the COVID-19 pandemic affecting so many marriages and families, how can you enjoy your spouse and family in this difficult season?
The best way to do this is to first examine the relationships around you and then intentionally look for ways to improve those relationships.
Here are five things you can do right now to bring more peace and joy within your home. These five principles are taken from Philippians 4:8. Take some time to think on the following 5 questions about your spouse and your children.
Whatever is true about your spouse/children? Think of your spouse/children the way God thinks of them. For example, think of your spouse as a child of God. Repent if your thinking is not in keeping with the word of God. Then restore and improve.
Whatever is honorable and worthy of respect? Think of your spouse/children as treasures and start treating them as treasures. The idea is for you to have a treasuring attitude towards your spouse and children. Be a need meter to others. Ask your spouse, are there any needs (practical but in keeping with the Word of God) you would like me to fulfill in this season, I will try my best to do it.
Whatever is lovely and brings peace? Think about the good times you had together as a couple and then as a family. Take it back to wedding day if needed. Think about ways to bring about peace. It’s okay to give your spouse the “benefit of the doubt” and stop the tendency to assume the worst about your spouse. Think about the wonderful vacations you had as a family.
Whatever is admirable and of good report? Write down a list of admirable things about your spouse/children and think on them. Also, by faith, write down some things you do not see but would like to see.
Finally, if there is anything worthy of praise? Write it down and think on these things.
If you apply these 5 principles, you will enjoy your marriage and family during this season. The idea is to draw out whatsoever is true about that person, whatsoever is honorable and worthy of respect; whatever is lovely and brings peace; whatever is admirable and of good report- this brings joy in your heart and in your home.
